Okay okay, I know that title is a bit drastic BUT having a Capsule Wardrobe / simplified closet for myself and my kids has been such a game changer for our family. Less clothes equal less laundry, less options mean less time figuring out what to wear. When you love the pieces you have and every single one of them was chosen with a purpose and is the proper fit – it makes getting dressed a breeze!
I was originally inspired by Marie Kondo’s often wardrobe-focused tidying technique ( have you watched her Netflix special yet?!) and Matilda Kahl’s choice to wear one outfit to work for three years, I know I am not the only one who is intrigued by a streamlined closet. Besides, who doesn’t have and resent a large selection of unworn, often low-quality items? I know I was guilty of this for way too many years.
ENTER THE CAPSULE WARDROBE.
I have been trying to create a version of a capsule for myself for the past few years with varying degrees of success, however this past year is the time I truly committed to the idea and its been amazing. I have a 40 piece capsule per season ( does not include undergarments, workout clothes, pajamas or bathing suits. ) In Atlanta there are pretty much 3 seasons – Moderate Winter, Hot and Humid, and HOLY CRAP ITS HOT. So my capsule might look pretty different from someone who actually experiences all 4 seasons – however, you can easily swap in and out what pieces work for you. Maybe you don’t need 4 pairs of shorts, and opt for an extra cardigan or two instead.
40 pieces is not a hard and fast rule, however I have found it to be generous enough to include variety yet still a streamlined and reduced closet.
Start by getting rid of anything you don’t absolutely LOVE – aka Marie Kondo that closet! Then move forward with making sure you’ve got basics and staple pieces for your current season. Then the fun can start and you can begin adding in the mix and match items.
I think I’m going to write a whole post on my process – but that will have to come a little later. I know you’re probably here to see pieces I have in my capsule and get inspired. So without any more rambling:

I’ve got a mini capsule 10 pieces 10 ways video here for some styling inspiration on how you can mix and match all your pieces! Remember it’s a process, and building a sustainable capsule that works for you might take a few seasons or more. Don’t feel like you have to purge everything and buy it all new! Shop your own closet, look for similar styled items at your favorite consignment store – or if you’re in a place that you can just order the whole dang capsule, then do it! And make sure to donate or sell your old pieces.
